Much better than the M6 and it has some great stretches, mostly fast and flowing so watch for police presence.

A good run on a warm summer evening, worth getting off the M6 for every time North or Southbound

I prefer this road from Shap to Kendal, best done early morning no traffic or police,it is warp factor fast on the first section into the dip, fast left tight hairpin ultra fast left and right into the tree section then about 8 miles of twisty smooth road into kendal.if your early enough turn round and do another lap, probabley the best road in the country.

Great run, better heading north IMO, watch out for the camera van that usually hides about 4 miles out of Kendal. Very very fast in some places.....if I'm over this way I do the Kirkstone Pass going south and head back north over this road. Quick tip...if heading out of Kendal, stop at the Texaco garage and have a bit banter with the old fella in the garage, he'll tell you if any police have went up the road.

Took this route on way from Cheshire to ferry at Stranraer once as I had time to spare and was completely blown away by the countryside on this stretch - after departing kendal it was just open roads with v little traffic, long sweeping bends and sometimes vis was miles (or so it seemed). Breathtaking and one of nicest stretches of road I've ridden for some time, though weather was great - wouldn't be so much fun in bouncing rain. Thanks for the tip regarding Police HQ at the end though.

Stunning route but watch for police presence constantly - if you get nicked up here you will be going very fast - probably - and the punishment will be high. Might be a good idea to do as a group ride - that way you will have moderating influences acting upon/around you, and you just may be able to hide in the pack!

A regular route to play out on, being very close to home. Leads to other wonderful routes not yet on here, so will let you into a few local secrets! Best done early evening when the Touroids are nose bagging and traffic is light. Be aware Police HQ is at the end of the route in Penrith. Did last year on the Bikesafe course with a nice man on a police motorcycle who did not hang around. Should see the cars pull over for him!

Just a couple of comments to add: Firstly be aware that the police presence here may be heightened as this route was mentioned in RiDE magazine's best routes. Secondly, I reckon the best part is the section between Shap and Kendal.

An interesting selection of high and medium speed corners with a few straights to get some speed up. This road twists around the northbound M6 and can be followed on a straighter section up to Carlisle (Although I personally find it more interesting on the Kendal/Clifton stretch)
